Application in Glass fiber
Wollastonite is a kind of natural needle like mineral material. The major compositions are SiO2 and CaO, (SiO2-53%, CaO-44%). On the other hand, CaO and SiO2 are important ingredients of E glass. Silica sand is a traditional ingredient of glass, but the hardness is very high, it’s 7 while the hardness of wollastotine is 4.5. Due to this high hardness, there are always coarse grains-more than 250um mixed in the required 45um powders. The coarse grain always cause problem like fiber breakage. In the mean time, melting point of silica sand is above 2000 °C while wollastontie is only 1450°C. The consumption of energy can be saved a lot if replace silica sand with wollastontie. Wollastonite’s CaO can partly replace the using of CaCO3 to reduce the emission of CO2.
